More Than 25 Years in the Field

My international perspective began well before my professional career. After periods living in Portugal and Brazil, I returned to Switzerland, where my career began in policing and military service before developing into more than 25 years of international security, operational, and capacity-building work.

My career with the United Nations began in New York, but it was never confined to headquarters. Over the years, I moved repeatedly between headquarters functions and extended field assignments—serving with UN operations in Georgia and Kosovo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Mali, and across sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. This was complemented by military service and training with the Swiss Armed Forces, including the Infantry Officer Academy and deployment with SWISSCOY in Kosovo, as well as numerous shorter assignments around the world.

More than a decade of my UN career was spent with the peacekeeping mission in Mali, working in an environment where security, operations, crisis management, and organizational resilience were not abstract concepts, but part of everyday decision-making.

Across these different roles and environments, my work has encompassed security operations, risk and crisis management, intelligence, doctrine development, training and capacity building, emergency medical preparedness, and organizational resilience. More recently, I have brought this experience to international organizations through consulting, curriculum and training development, exercise design, medical preparedness, and practical capacity-building initiatives.

Working across different countries, cultures, organizations, and operational environments has shaped how I think about risk. Risk rarely exists in isolation. It emerges from the interaction between people, environments, systems, decisions, preparedness, and uncertainty. Understanding those relationships—and translating them into practical action—has become the common thread running through my work.

Today, those experiences and disciplines come together through decarliONE: an integrated approach to understanding risk, strengthening readiness, and building practical capability.

The Human Side
of Risk

This is where I would make the page more personal.

Risk management is ultimately about people.

Frameworks, matrices, procedures and technology matter—but people still have to recognize the problem, understand the information, make a decision and act.

That is why training has become such an important part of my work.

Whether working with security professionals, humanitarian personnel, military officers, emergency responders or people simply trying to prepare themselves better, I believe knowledge becomes valuable only when it can be understood, remembered and applied when it matters.

That principle influences everything I develop through decarliONE—from organizational training programs and tabletop exercises to simple interactive tools designed for everyday users.

From Professional Risk Management to Everyday Decisions

Most people will never manage a security crisis, coordinate an emergency response or work in a conflict environment.

But everyone manages risk.

We drive We travel. We work in heat. We exercise. We make health decisions. We interact with unfamiliar environments and people. We decide when to prepare, when to act and sometimes when to do nothing.

And those decisions are frequently influenced by incomplete information, misleading statistics, cognitive biases and incorrect perceptions of probability.

This led to another part of decarliONE's mission:

Making risk easier to understand.

Through interactive tools, visualizations and educational content, I want to translate complex risk concepts into something people can explore themselves.

Not to tell people what decisions to make—but to help them understand what changes the outcome.

From Experience to Perspective

My professional path has crossed disciplines that are often treated separately.

Security. Risk. Military operations. Policing. Emergency medicine. Public health. Training. Human behavior. Crisis management.

In practice, they are deeply connected.

A security problem can quickly become a medical problem. A communication failure can become an operational problem. Poor training can turn a manageable hazard into a serious incident. And seemingly small individual decisions can significantly alter an outcome.

Working across these disciplines has shaped how I approach risk today: not as an isolated threat, but as a system of people, decisions, environments, capabilities, vulnerabilities, and consequences.
